I'll attest to that, I owned a '91 Jetta which I bought new and it had the 1.8 liter, 8 valve 4 cylinder. That engine was bulletproof. When I sold the car it had over 180K miles and it still started at the touch of the key and ran like the day I bought it.

I did stay on top of oil changes, but otherwise gave it no extraordinary maintenance.
