They make a clackety-clack noise if they are loose. If you're made it to camp, just tighten them as best as possible (assuming you have the correct twelve point wrench. I've never had a loose joint lose grease to any great amount; it tends to stay inside the boots, assuming they are uncompromised. You might want to stop at a VW shop of one sort or antoher just to get them all properly torqued (great for peace of mind).
