if all you need to do is protect some exposed wire ( and it would be better to keep an original wire in one piece, rather than splice on to it ) ...... what works great is Liquid Electrical Tape., it's a small can of brush-on vinyl..............comes in black or red. Dab some of that on there..........that wire is protected for a long, long time. Regular black electrical tape never really makes a very good repair ....... not for a small wire or two. It' gets gummy and loose after a while, oil eats it etc. Where something big needs to be wrapped ............like a whole wire harness say .......then black electrical tape seems to work pretty well. I often put a wire tie over the very end wrap to keep it from coming undone. check out Liquid Electrical Tape - it's perfect for your situation here. clean the wires of oil n' stuff first, like with carb cleaner say .......so you have nice clean dry wires to put the stuff on.
