I am in the middle of repairing a similar wiring issue. (this is on the Jetta ABA engine in my Vanagon) Pic of ECT (coolant temp sensor) ground and other wire (for temp gauge) http://lh5.ggpht.com/_VILbPC2UTU8/SspkjH3CLfI/AAAAAAAAABs/itInDChM1f0/s576/ECTbadWires.jpg Original wires ok at time of install. I even shrink wrapped them near the connector. But. I figure heat, unplugging/plugging in connector, caused the casing to fail. If the OP has time and is ok with soldering etc. ..... I'm not sure about the Vanagon wiring harness connectors, but for the connectors on my Jetta engine, I found new female contacts with new wire. Not saying it has to be done this way. Just suggesting that if one wire casing is cracked/missing near connector, it might be worth replacing both wires with new ones. Neil.
