Very good advise on changing the oil as soon as it fixed.

My mind goes to stuck open injector or two. there is no cold start valve btw .........not on Vanagons.

I would pull the injectors, ( just one 10 mm hex head screw ) and hang them out where you can see the, still on their fuel hoses, crank the engine, watch the spray pattern. ( disable ignition .- pull the black wire of coil terminal 15 so you don't have a change of any sparks while fuel is spraying ) ....... and see what the injectors do. You could have one that never really shuts off properly.

If you get moving, and you are southbound and on Interstate 5 in southern Oregon ....... if you can make it to my shop .........we can get it fixed, for sure. I have endless vanagon parts, and good access to quality, usually german, new parts. I'm just off Exit 24 .......Phoenix Oregon. Vanagon travelers often stop by for on the road repairs, emergency repairs, or projects we do on their van ... sometimes they do most of the hands on work under my direction, etc. Or sometimes I'm the tech, and they don't do any of the work, and sometimes we do it together, have a great time, you get to learn more about keeping your vanagon happy etc. I'm imaging an injector very stuck open, or something like that. Being so bad, it might not be that hard a thing to find the reason for. - whether just super rich or whatever.....but even 'super rich' you don't get fuel coming out of the tail pipe. It has gasoline ( and not diesel or something else ) in it, right ?
