They make a clackety-clack noise if they are loose. If you're made it to camp, just tighten them as best as possible (assuming you have the correct twelve point wrench. I've never had a loose joint lose grease to any great amount; it tends to stay inside the boots, assuming they are uncompromised.

You might want to stop at a VW shop of one sort or antoher just to get them all properly torqued (great for peace of mind).

The CV is clunking consistently with deceleration, and we're near Grants Pass for the night. In the morning, I'm going to add a lot more grease and re-torque, hoping she'll make it to SF. We'll be in downtown or Oakland for a few days; I plan on removing and repacking while there.

But just in case, does anyone have a good used CV that will fit? Or a lift I can rent for a few hours?
