Did you swap in a new switch?

If so, I'd check/clean connections at starter, battery, and ground strap from tranny to frame. Likely you've done this already though.

Does your Vanagon have an automatic transmission?

A long shot, but are all the spade connectors at plug to ign. switch properly in place?
