Hey Chris,

My youngest brother fell from an 18-footer onto concrete a couple decades ago. Broke both legs, etc., I was in an auto accident in '79 that busted my right ankle and hip, left knee totally shattered, had to have it done up with a new titanium model in '97, and last May my right ankle finally blew, bone-on-bone tibia-to-talus and I had it fused in June. We, too, have experienced the amazing frustration and loss of freedom when bed-ridden, wheelchair-bound, crippled up, and in pain. Lots of pain.

Hang in there, man. As Tom BZ says, sharpen your writing skills. Maybe start a blog -- I found it helpful to write about how I felt.

I also found it restful to find a quiet place in the house warmed by the sun to just park the wheelchair and sit and read while bits knit together.

I'm presently in a stabilization boot, but can walk (well, lurch or clump about) in the boot. It wasn't until about a couple months ago I could drive again. Then I was able to camp with my wife. Then by myself. Now I'm doing chores around the house and tinkering with stuff in the Vanagon (transparently futile attempt at VC).

Things progress, although slower than the hour hand on an clock.
