Last week I was looking for a working odometer. Found one on the Samba and got the whole cluster. I also have a working tach from a diesel van that I'd like to get into the new cluster rather than the analog clock...My current one with the broken odo also has a clunky clock... I think I can figure out how to make the water temp and the fuel guage work, the one in the tach face..Hopefully. I have somewhere a reference about which pins in the plug work for those...but looking at the foils I have around, I see I can actually follow the leads back to the plug and get stuff working that way. But, where is a good place to take a signal for the tach? Is there a rpm-based signal anywhere up front or do I need to go back to the coil or the alternator or the distributor and run a wire all the way up to the tach from the engine? Mine is an inline four, but the alternator, coil and the distributor are the same as a WBX. It has a Digifant II injection system. Anybody know? I'd first like to test the tach using a test wire lead first, to make sure I get good response before I bother trying to make the other two "in Tach" gauges operable.. The only downside is the tach I have only goes to 6k and my motor may rev a bit higher sometimes. sounds like it maybe..I see no upper limit pin on the tach face, so I am hoping I can go a little past 6k without breaking the tach...Not that I drive there ever, but I have been known to wind the little inline up to keep up with traffic at times.
