First you need to verify that the Diesel tach is usable with and correctly calibrated for the signal from the coil primary. The diesels get their tach signal from the W terminal of the alternator which I suspect is much higher frequency and much lower voltage than you'll get from the coil. The coil signal probably peaks around 100 volts.
