Frank, Thanks for the info - it is a PITA - but I was able to get it off by letting it all soak in a container full of the The Works. That stuff eats rust like you wouldn't believe. So eventually the cable end let go it's death grip on that ball. Had I been thinking I would have ordered some POR before I started this mess. I gave the lever a good coat of rustoleum self etching primer and rustoleum engine paint. SHould do for now.
