As for maps, I've VERY uncomfortable with them, and it takes me a very long time to figure out where I am in relation to the map and my destination. If it's not dawn or dusk (or if it's cloudy,) I don't know whether I'm pointed north, south, east, or west! Once I am able to tell where I am, I'm okay with a map, but I'd much rather be using a GPS. With my GPS, I don't have to know where I am, and if I miss a turn or an exit, it'll reroute me. Right now I'm using the older Garmin eTrex Legend. It doesn't talk; it just makes noises and beeps, but it has definitely cut down my "hopelessly lost" episodes to nearly zero. My cell phone, the Samsung Omnia i910, also has a built-in GPS, and is of great help to me if I don't have my Garmin, but I don't have any good mapping software on it, yet, so it's not as good as a dedicated GPS unit.
