This would make the air inside Your van change better. These vents are for venting out the inside air in order to get fresh in from the front. Mine is 1990 syncro with rear vents and the original vents in front doors closed: http://picasaweb.google.com/janne.ruohomaki/Welle#5358240469555664130

I would bet that if You drive Your Westy in humid or cold environment and with several people travelling in the van during years You would get less rusted seams inside the van. Thats because less condensed water in cold metal surfaces. And anyways if You drive in some desert You would like to change the air in whole van, not just front of it.

Also I would assume that in cold environments You migh get rust pretty easily on the places there the vent in that picture above leads to. Thats because warm moist air from inside is being constantly sucked through those channels. What powers that suction is forward movement of the van that causes low pressure near the door hinges. Rear window wents are more resistant to this. But they also leak way more heat outside when van is parked.
