RE: Fuel Filters The list wisdom when this subject has come up in the past is that VW instructed their dealers to eliminate the pre-filter the first time the fuel filter was to be replaced, only replace the big filter that comes after the fuel pump. Speculation as to why ranges all the way from "It was there to catch production junk from the gas tank" to a conspiracy by Fidel Castro.
