Hi Volks,

I now have about 1000 miles on the replacement engine in my Vanagon. It's running smoothly, but is not making as much power as I'd like. If I wind it out before easing out the clutch it almost drives like a normal van, but it's also getting only about 200 miles to a tank of fuel, so I suspect something strange is going on. It idles well but bogs when you start rolling if you drive it normally.

It's a 1.9 running later model FI and cooling in a 1987 chassis. The FI and cooling parts came off the previous engine after it was severely messed up by a thermostat failure. The replacement engine is a low-miles VW of Canada reman which just needed its head gaskets replaced when the PO dumped it in favour of a zetec. Compression was checked after the new gaskets were installed and reads at 185/185/170/175. Lifters were initially an issue but they have been readjusted and are now much quieter. (read: silent).

Timing is adjusted. Distributor and wires are new. O2 sensor is installed. The Ken Lewis O2 sensor widget shows the ECU is correcting the mixture. Frank Condelli helped set up the throttle position sensor at a recent VW get-together at Bon Echo Provincial Park so I know that's working.

Happy Trails,
