very true. but i've found that you can usually get around that if you create the correct defaults - like no interstates or no unpaved roads. i usually go for the shortest distance with no interstates and no major highways. i've found some very cool byways that way. and i'm hardly ever in a hurry so i don't really care if it finds the "best" route.

now when planning a real trip i always use something like google maps and combine that with real maps and create a route that i want to take. then i convince my GPS to remember it and give me instructions on how to follow it - like it will tell me that the interstate exit i need to take is in one mile from the left lane. it may be that some maps have that info, but i sure can't find when i'm driving down the interstate. and if i'm on the interstate it usually means i have somewhere important to be quickly since i REALLY don't like big highways.
