I know I sound redundent and probably stupid, but spend a couple bucks on some new plug wires and try em out. If you don't know when the last time they were changed, it maintenance anyway. I was getting an intemittent loss and surging before I replaced mine. Also take the cap off your distributor and peek inside with a flashlight and make sure the wires on the hall sender are good.
