I put both the VW 2.1, 1.9 (right now), air cooled 2.0L and the Subie 2.2 on a regular off the shelf engine stand.

I had to be creative, using only 3 of the mounts, turned as needed and lot's of washers (as shims) with a long bolt. (I did have to take the clutch OFF to get the VW engine on the stand). The stand works great!

I went to Harbor Freight when the stand was on sale and picked it up as it's heavy. When shopping for one don't forget your FLAPS, with shipping added in they might be a better deal.
