Boy, you said a mouthful there! In a perfect world it might be easy, but in this world everything has resistance and everything that has current passing through it develops a voltage difference across it. If <MFR> put eight wires in a harness that all lead to common -- *especially but not exclusively* if they lead to different places on the chassis -- there may very well be an electrical reason for it, and if you don't thoroughly understand that reason it could cause you unending irritation and problems if you change it, even to the extent of changing where on the chassis it goes. Obviously you have to do a certain amount of the last when doing an engine conversion.
