This is happening on my 2001 Ford F250 right now. The clip on the plug that holds the electrical connection nice and snug is broken. If I push the bulb into the socket nice and tight, the buld burns bright but when i let go, the bulb dims again. In my case, I need a new plug... Maybe you do too. Joe

Last time I changed bulbs, I used Di-Electric grease and the contacts appeared clean.
