While the Vanagon keyway is unique to the Vanagon, the other similar VW keyways are close enough for a thin plastic simulacrum key of the same general width and length as a VW key to work. Personally, my solution was to take a cheapie brass dupe on an ilco X110 and drill the hole out bigger, then un-wingnut one bolt of my license plate and sandwich the key between the license plate and the inspection door with the bolt through the hole.
