There is a contact in the shifter that sometimes goes awry. You can remove it, clean it and re-install. For the time being, try cranking the engine while you use your other hand to wiggle the shifter and I bet it starts. Good luck. Michael in San Antonio 91GL AT 'Gringo' 73 Beetle
