The strips on the Vanagon as opposed to the earlier model VWs are fairly robust, so they rarely go bad. Best to check all the terminals for clean connections and the wiring from the switch as well.

I haven't used mine in over a decade, I keep the curtains closed up, so I *rarely* see out my rear window (I live full time in mine).
