They're easily damaged from the inside, but don't AFAIK deteriorate by themselves. I think the paint is silver-filled. You can also probe the strips themselves to find a break in a particular strip. Where (along the strip) the +12 vanishes, there's your break. FLAPS has little bottles of conductive (copper-filled) paint for fixing them.
