Activated charcoal from the fish store is the right stuff, assuming . BBQ charcoal is maybe a bit better than nothing.

I was wrong about the surface area of activated charcoal/carbon. Instead of an acre per teaspoon, it's more like four tenths of an acre per tablespoon. Still very impressive.
