Out of curiosity, how did they break down the parts and labor? As others have said, you may be able to get by with replacing the regulator/brush set, but if not, alternator replacement is not a labor-intensive job, and you can get a Bosch rebuilt for under $120 plus core. You can get cheaper autoparts store brand for less. I replaced mine in the parking lot of an AutoZone in under an hour, and you can probably do it in half that time. The most difficult part, if you can even call it that, it changing out the pulley, as most new ones come without the pulley. You've just got to hold the shaft with an allen wrench while you turn the bolt.
