I have had really good results with these guy's mufflers. I have one right now on my inline 1.8 liter VW/vanagon that's gone about 40k miles so far. Stainless. 12" x 4" oval, mounted "on edge" across the back between the motor and the bumper with the pipe coming out like a standard vanagon..Sounds nice and flows well.

For a while I used a lot of Borlas on my big motor car, but they kept blowing out and they refused to warrantee them for a race car. Plus those Borlas were outrageously expensive to last only a couple of races, but they were one of the few makers with a product suitable for a 3.5" diameter exhaust system. I switched to the Magnaflows and had no blow out problems..now I use em when I have a custom exhaust done..

If going custom is your plan, you might take a look at the Magnaflow site. I have no connection with them.
