Hi Doug,

I agree with John 100%.

Vanagons are amazing vehicles. There's nothing else quite like 'em, and those of us that love 'em do indeed stick together exactly as John says. I am a lousy mechanic but I've done a lot with the aid of this list.

Some Vanagonuts have given up on the original VW engines and installed engines from other manufacturers instead - notably Subarus (try http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/subaruvanagon/ or for a more pictorial introduction, http://www.subaruvanagon.com/ ) and the Ford Zetec (see http://www.bostig.com/ ).

But in the meantime John's advice should be followed.

One point: you said there was a smell of coolant while driving: if you're smelling it in the cab, it may be related to the front heater.

I've replaced my heater core, it was a PIA but as I say, I'm a terrible mechanic and I got it done. As long as coolant is topped up

(not just the filler you can see through the license plate hole, but the plastic expansion tank that is under the engine cover) this may be something you can live with for a while.

The vans made in and after 1986 are generally considered an improvement over the previous models.

Good luck with it,

Steve Edwards 91 GL with Subaru 2.2 in the trunk and 204,000 miles on the odometer.
