Having run a majorly modded TDI on a Syncro Gearbox with circa 350ft/lbs or torque.  You WILL kill 3rd and 4th gear unless they are aftermarket ones with big teeth.  I killed 3rd by hauling a trailer with a quad on it it going up a hill - factory gears are way too weak.

Next failure point is the CVs, ate these like crazy until I put in 108mm Porsche 930 units.

Next failure point is accelerated wear of the ring and pinion and bearings for the ring and pinion.  I ran redline MTL, changed it once a year. 

200 to 250 ft.lbs is the max I would ever run thru a Vanagon gear box.  It's a van, not a race car or a heavy truck.
