It has probably been said but I'll chip in (and I'm a long time hater of generators camping from years in the scouts in my youth) that a Honda EU1000i can run right next to you sleeping in a tent and most people don't even know it's running.  As I get older and lazier, more spoiled, and achier, I often appreciate having it.  I actually never really run mine overnight, but I have/would on occasion, and having "shore power" can be really convenient at times without annoying people overly.  Similarly modern Onan MicroQuiets and Kohlers are pretty darn quiet, in big RVs, though nothing beats the little Honda.  The Chinese ripoffs (Kipor) are even nearly as good though not always as reliable, I also have one of them in 2kw (branded as McCulloch) for running my boiler at home when power goes down.  Anyway YMMV on this one.  The Honda sips gas, and truely, truely is that quiet, always have been.  I recall being amazed in the 80s by their 500, 650, 1000W non inverters back then and the modern ones are even more silent.  You can always share with your neighbor BTW so you aren't being quite so selfish....

I, too, think that generators are really bad when camping.  Why someone would assume that other people within earshot of their generator noise are not being constantly bothered by that irritating noise has always puzzled me.  Running a generator in a quiet public environment is very selfish.  They make noise. Just for YOU.
