I'll take a more optimistic approach (though I note Tom is likely correct.)  I would PPG wax/grease remove the areas, then wet sand the areas gently with 1000 grit wet/dry (do NOT try to fully featheredge or you will remove all the color in the center before getting the edges down all the way, intentionally sand the outside of the edges 10 time what you do the center of the spot, with a good firm block), then I would go to my PPG dealer and get a spray can filled with clear acryllic enamel (will be non hardened of course in the spray can) as it is probably the best chance at not lifting old finish.  Wipe the area again with good wax and grease remover, apply 2-3 coats, then "color (well its clear)" sand the area with 600 gingerly again outside the repair to level to the old clear more than at the center of the repair, then 1000, and buff.  I've had fair results doing the same, that have lasted more than 2 years, when doing spot repair on my wifes '01 Rav4 in about '05 still looks perfect today.  Don't take away too much on the initial sanding of the color though, and don't expect miracles or perfection (which I did get on the Rav4 actually amazingly.)  YMMV.  Most peoples problems doing this is using some crappy paint, pay the $10-12 for a spray can of real auto paint, and if you sand, clean, and prep like a real spot repair, it may last like a real spot repair.  Or not, but you aren't out much trying.  Now if you are in CA or somewhere they don't sell real paint anymore, I have no idea what to do.   John

My experience is - anything you spray on will be peeling off within 2 years. To do it right it has to be re-sprayed & then re-clear coated.

Doing some cleaning on the exterior and have some of the clear coat peeling in spots.  Can I buy this somewhere for spot application?  Also got a sander/polisher form Harbor Freight for 27.99 after coupon.
