I sent this message to fellow list member a few weeks ago, re rotary controls alistair '86 syncro 7 passenger '82 westy, diesel converted to gas in '94 http://www.members.shaw.ca/albell/ http://shufti.wordpress.com
hi Frank, nipped up to the autowreckers the others day, want to swap square headlight grill out of my '86 and replace with round. My '82's grill was broken in the accident. I found 2 very nice bosch H4 lights, almost new (made in sweden) but grill had a couple of tabs missing. anyway, i wandered around yard, thinking about the delay dim interior light units from '90s-'00's golf/jetta/passat when i found a golf with the rotary controls pulled out. you know the kind, 3 large circular knobs, fan speed, temp, and distribution. I had always assumed they were vacuum controls, but no, they drive a cute gear set that pull cables via levers. a clever guy may be able to adapt to vanagon. fan speed and temp pretty simple. distribution, well may be hard. ab

I have all sorts of web sites bookmarked for either vacuum or electric powered 5/8" coolant flow valves and airflow diverter servos. I'm still looking for a control panel that'll fit. Haven't been to pick a part lately. My most ridiculous notion on the subject has been to divert the AC output to the SIDES, where the speakers are, then pipe it to the rearmost body vent there above the windows, which would allow the cold air to come out the regular front vents, like a "real car". Closing off the intake to prevent outside air intrusion might be a nightmare though.... -- John Bange |
