I'm surprised to see two references of
R & R-ing an automatic trans in a vanagon is a big job.
its not.
One of the great beauties of vanagons is - to remove the transmission, you
'just remove the transmission.'
leave the engine there and supported.
besides the disconnection from the eninge, it's just the starter, the
axles, the linkage and throttle cable, , and the oil cooler hoses. . Not
many connections or things to unbolt at all.
With any kind of floor jack or transmission jack, it's a piece of cake,
really.
