I dunno -- the drawing of the Seal on page 58.2 does not make it look like
anything that could leave a black ring on the paint surrounding the hole
where the stem of the outer handle goes through the door. The Seal clearly
does not have any kind of "lip" that could form the ring I'm seeing.
The Trim Ring looks like it could form a ring around the opening, but the
puzzling bit is that my 1984 does not have the Trim Ring or the Seal, but
it does have the Escutcheon (page 58.18) for 1985-on.
So it's non-standard for the sliding door's inner panel to be held in
place with about 10 oval-head screws in dress washers? No clips, no hidden
bits?
If that's the case, it will be the first evidence that this van has had
any modifications. Well, that and the presence of a 1985-and-later
Escutcheon on the stem of the outer handle for the sliding door.
