Didn't see your response as "grumpy"! Thanks.

To: rgolen@hotmail.com CC: vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com Ahhhhh. Then. go East young man. Was just replying to a lister about the WBX and noted, if you have a conversion in good shape, go for it. By myself, I would do it. Loaded and w/passengers and breaking in middle of night/nowhere would suck. Good luck. Sorry about the grumpiness. :-)

Michael, I appreciate your advice and concerns vis a vis a 20 something car. I wouldn't do the trip in any 20 year old car...my Westy has the last engine Boston Bob built before his passing, a rebuilt tranny from Daryl at AA transaxle, new brakes, steering rack, shocks, etc. We put the van together for long distance trips ( I joke that its going to be my retirement home). Its been to the Keys twice, etc. We just haven't done a straight through trip.

Ok. Ric. I may be a little grumpy so here goes. Why would you try that in a 20 soemthing old vehicle with riders? You get what you get if you try it. Sounds kinda dumb to me, but make sure your ER kit is full before you get started. Also, the little black pills at the truck stop with the yellow stripes will keep you up but you may regret it later when you can't sleep through the sound of your own beating heart from the amp up. You wanna get there quick, rent a car. Mty .02. Michael in San Antonio 91GL AT 'Gringo' 73 Beetle

My wife, son and I are going to take our Westy on a road trip next week from our house (south of Boston) to Sarasota, FL. It appears to be a 24 hour trip. My wife thinks it would be neat to making the trip non-stop (other than gas, food, etc.).
Admittedly some 25+ years ago I would do this at a drop of the proverbial drop of the hat, and in fact have done it a couple of times. But being an "old fart" I have some trepidations in doing a straight through drive. My endurance, eye sight, etc. ain't what it used to be.
The plan is to leave next Friday at 6pm drive through the night and arrive early Sat evening. Any hints, suggestions, etc? Red Bull? "speedballs"? espresso? 3 hrs driving, 3hrs off?? I don't want to end up stuffed in a guard rail somewhere en route.
Thanks in advance!
Ric
