Thanks, Jonce.
That "escutcheon"* was used on 1985 and later vans.
The 1980-1984 vans have a "trim ring" and a "seal." The trim ring is
stamped 251-843-711 (my van does not have a seal so I don't know if it has
a p/n on it).
The 1985-later vans have an escutcheon and no seal.
Bentley's shows all three parts (see pages 58.2 and 58.18).
I think the escutcheon's p/n is 251-843-711A. BD's search engine brings up
the escutcheon when you plug in 251-843-711. I think they are ignoring the
"A" suffix and lumping the escutcheon together with the trim ring. Jonce's
link shows the escutcheon's p/n with the "A" suffix.
The trim ring and the escutcheon are not physically similar, the former
looking like a step washer, the latter more grommet-y.
My 84 van has its trim ring, but is missing the seal. Before I gum up the
threads with blue Loctite (or fingernail polish, as Jake suggested) and
re-install the door panel, I'd like to determine whether tracking down --
or fabricating -- a seal is worthwhile.
It might have been a black foam flat washer which rotted and fell off like
Pascal describes earlier in this thread, or it might have been something
more substantial, I can't tell.

* Having to come up with words for all these parts must be a challenge.
