Thank you, Daryl, for the professional's word on that.

What do you think about the symptoms noted, and the mechanic's guess about what might be causing them?

Jim Thompson suggested that this needs immediate attending-to, as permanent damage may be ready to happen to the diff and/or tranny. I'm trying to weigh the cost vs the risk. Any further Wise Words on this matter would be appreciated.
