As a professional driver (transit bus), I don't suggest driving more than you may be used to. In order to follow OSHA, our drivers must have 30 min off for each 6 hrs, 1hr for 9hrs, 90min for 12 hrs, and we don't let anyone drive for more than 12 hours. Keep in mind, this is 12 hours of in town driving while letting passengers on and off, etc.

When we road tripped in our Vanagon this past summer, I was the primary driver. I second the suggestion of bringing music to sing to or talk radio. Even when I drove all day, I would take extended breaks every time we stopped for fuel (every 2 1/2 hours or so) even though I am well used to driving 6-9hours at a time.

My thoughts are that interstate travel wears out the mind long before the body so keep that mind active.
