welllll.......... knowing how to check the basic fluid levels in any vehicle doesn't fall under 'mechaical epptitude'. It falls under 'basic opertor responisibility.'

like if an car /owner operator doesn't even know what a screw drive is, they, or perhaps their man-servant, needs to know how to check basic things. Any idea on how to check the brake fluid level ? it's cleverly hidden on a vanagon, and ...... it's nearly the only car or van there is in which you can check the brake fluid level in the resevoir, in flight. Though it's not recommended for safety reasons.

now, off topic, but related to driving and happy vanagon operation :

Don't forget the Oregon law about hands-free cell phone use that starts Jan 1st, and ........here's one that's getting a LOT of people around here ( Medford/Ashland, OR ) ...... there's a law now that if an emergency vehicle is stopped on the side of a freeway, you MUST either move over to the next lane to the left or, if you can't do that safey, then you must slow down in order to pass the emergency vehicle safetly. They are handing out tickets to people who cruise by a cop car that has someone stopped on the side of the freeway, if they stay in the right lane, and maintain speed. So be careful for that one in Oregon.

Jan 1st the law also appllies to tow trucks, highway workers, and even those guys picking up trash on the side of the freeway. If you just safely stay at cruise speed in the right hand lane, it's a ticket if you don't move over one lane to the left, or slow down. And they sure don't seem bashful about stopping anyone for any little reason around here, especially on I-5 in Southern Oregon. They did a sting operation here in medford about a week ago - on the 'maintain safe distance from an emergency vehicle law. . The ticket is $ 287, and they handed out many scores of them on one day, on one stretch of highway. Tain't safe to be a citizen in ones own country anymore.
