Hi Neil, if you want to see what the voltage regulator looks like for the Megasquirt ECU, go to http://www.megamanual.com/index.html and click on the "V3 DIY Main Board" link in the left column. About half way down that page will be schematics for the VR with components listed.

I would be curious to see how this compares with the OE VW stuff.

So there's obviously something in the ECU circuitry that regulates and/or protects the voltage sensitive components from damage (within reason). Something similar to the Vanagon voltage stabilzer on the instrument cluster foil.

I have an air cooled Vanagon ECU. Maybe I'll pop off the cover and have a look-see. Much simpler I'm sure, so maybe there's an obvious component visible.
