Not to speak for Mike, but I suspect he was being
conservative.  Sealed Lead-Acid (SLA) batteries are rated by the mfrs
for installation and use in any position.  That being said all
lead-acid batteries contain a good whack of sulfuric acid in there
and if sufficiently tortured can be induced to throw it about the
room.  And if the room is spelled b-i-l-g-e or s-u-b-m-a-r-i-n-e and
contains salt water, a lovely big cloud of gaseous chlorine is one of
the results.  Bigger on a submarine, where the individual battery
cells are the size of filing cabinets or better.
