Just curious if some kind of magic orange dust had been inadvertently
imported.  ;)

Yes. A German lid is best IMO. (says he with the lump in the back  ;)

I wonder if there's a different (more modern) Bosch engine management
system that could be swapped over? Maybe something from a later model
year Audi?

Maybe more trouble than it's worth.....
