AFAIK, there's only insulation on the engine lid for all years. Is it
present? If not, installing stock insulation should be sufficient.
IIRC, yours is a diesel with a gas engine swap. If so, the engine lid
should be stock. (uncut/modified like mine) Can't see why insulation
would be missing (if that's the case)

Though I'm using a modified engine lid for my inline VW engine swap,
the stock insulation keeps engine/exhaust quiet.

Pic of my lid showing what the stock insulation looks like for an '81
air cooled. Likely similar for other model years. It's modified, but
note the rings holding insulation in place on RH side. Those are the
stock rings.

To my eye, the insulation looks quite similar to the stuff that was on
the front hood of my '81 diesel Rabbit. If no Vanagon insulation at
the bone yard, maybe insulation from another VW?

(btw, check out Vancouver CL. There's been lots more Vanagon parts there lately)
