Having had my own cooling system woes recently, I have read and awful lot of material on bleeding the system both here and at theSamba.com. What I have never read in any place except the Bentley is the direction to open and close the engine compartment bleeder screw. Why is this so? Bentley 19.16, Fig. 6 clearly shows the direction to use the bleeder in the engine compartment.

I figured it must not matter much if no one mentions it. But, in fact, whilst using the Libby Bong method, I remembered that I hadn't opened that bleeder. I did so and when I did, I got a satisfying burble and the system took in considerably more coolant. So, is everyone bleeding at this screw or not? Is the 1.9 different in this respect? I've never read of it in either account of coolant bleeding, 1.9 or 2.1.
