That has to do with the difference between "market value" and "replacement cost". It could easily cost $25K to procure a decent Vanagon and bring it up to the standard of the one you previously had. Simply being a Westy or a Syncro Westy with a decent paint job and low miles says nothing about what's REALLY important. As with most things, the devil is in the details: seals, gaskets, rings, joints, wires, pipes, hoses, etc. A van with all that stuff meticulously restored is easily worth low to mid 5 figures. Merely being a rare model with low miles isn't the all of it.
