Anyone in the area with any ideas?

The first 300 miles of my two weeks vacation went fine this afternoon. But then somewhere on I5 power was lost, engine quit, Truck stop handy, 2 quarts oil were added and I limped 250 miles with a valve ticking three cylinder TDI that uses a quart of oil every 60 miles. Somehow I'm not tempted to drive 1200 miles including 100 miles of rough dirt roads in Death Valley with this engine. :)

Still, I have not yet given up on taking mom on vacation and am considering all options.

For now I'm safely parked at my sisters place near Salinas California, ready for a T-day feast and am contemplating options. There is plenty of parking room here, and I could collect enough tools at Shucks to do what I need, Plus there is a full on 4WD V10 Dodge if I need to tow.

My 3AM thoughts: * Can I get a TDI long block locally on Friday and install it over the weekend? * Can I buy a trip ready westie somewhere around here and sell it later? * Maybe a Rialta would be good for a quick to get reliable ride?

I figured some of you might know of things I'm missing so I'll put it out there.

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving! -- -Otmar- Corvallis Oregon 82/86 Stretch Vanagon Westfalia 5 speed TDI . "Power of two" http://www.evcl.com/vw '74 914 EV,'01 Insight EV,'08 Toy Pious,'85 Tercel wagon, '87 Grumman step van, plus all the non automotive vehicles...
