Good suggestion. Given that the coil to dist wire was compromised I'm willing to believe that the wires may be the culprit.

What puzzles me though is why I can get it to start from cold with a little throttle. I then have to hold it at idle or it will die. That seems to me to be more fuel/air/throttle boy to me. Perhaps TPS?
