Get a huge fire extinguisher or 3, with friends for each one. Start it up and drive it out of the garage. Get it out onto the street and remove the wire from the coil so it won't start, or better yet something that won't even let it turn over. Now put your engine hatch back on and cover it with enough possessions that no tow driver will even want to touch it.... Call AAA and tell them you broke down on the street (you did). Tow it to a shop, tell the shop what you think the problem was "and by the way, i've been smelling gasoline can you look into that?".

Lead the horse to the water.
