RE: Ohm meter/multi meter not reading zero when shorted If an analog meter there will normally be an adjustment on the face of the meter to zero it. Also, the zero setting will be different, especially on a cheap analog meter, depending on it's physical orientation, lay down or standing up. Also, there is a battery inside the meter that when going dead, will make resistance readings erratic. A very usable and adequate (for the purposes being discussed here) digital meter can be had a Radio Shack for about $15.

RE: Alternator failures 80% or better of failures in the alternator will be just worn brushes. And the regulator/brush pack for the alternator is easy to change, just two screws. I had to do that in the middle of a trip about a year ago. When the alternator bearings are going you will bet a whine. A momentary 'screech' when applying load or accelerating is usually a loose belt, probably on the alternator. And the WBX engine is famous for the 'ticking noise' when starting up, it's the hydraulic valve lifters pumping up. If it goes away in a few minutes that's probably what it is. If it persists then may well be a different problem. This is minimized with the right weight oil and, according to some, the proper make of oil filter.
