It's been a few years since I did the research, and I was specifically trying to get my dirtbike to run cooler. Once I started using overheating virtually went away (whereas before it would overheat once or twice per outing). You might do a search on Water Wetter (which, by the way is made by Redline) to learn the specific science about it.

However (in a nutshell) here is what I recall from my research:

1) Water is a better conductor of heat. That's why we don't run straight coolant.

2) Water Wetter allows water molecules to make better contact with metal surfaces like the cylinder walls and radiator. Better contact with cylinder walls means better heat absorption. Better contact with the radiator means better heat dispersion.

Now that I think about it, I did not add a lubricant as Water Wetter already provided that.

Again, I wouldn't bother using this stuff in my Vanagon or any other vehicle running under normal circumstances. Can you imagine bleeding the Vanagon system twice a year (at least if you're in a cold environment like me here in Indy)? Yuck!
